Historic Home in St. Michaels

The History
Built around 1790 by Thomas Harrison Jr., "house carpenter," the two-story side hall/parlor clapboard house is the oldest two story dwelling in St. Michaels. It stands prominently on the town harbor adjacent the town PARK. The house is fitted with late eighteenth century style woodwork. The floors are wide plank heart of pine, and the windows have very old glass. The federal style stair, the raised six panel doors, and the period chair rails are original features.

Harrison family ownership continued until 1854 when the property was transferred to the Mansfield family who held title until 1898. During the mid 1800's a two-story wing was added extending from the rear of the original Harrison house.

In 1992, a one and one-half story wing was added to the west side of the original house (on the left as you face the house) by the current owners, the Byrne family.

The Rooms
On the first floor of the original or 'Harrison House' are the side hall (foyer) and a large PARLOR (living room) with a spectacular view of St. Michaels Harbor. To the rear of the living room in the Mansfield wing is the LIBRARY having a fireplace, books, a television, VCR, stereo, games, cards and puzzles, and the DINING ROOM which can comfortably seat ten. To the rear of the dining room is a one story wing build around 1920 which houses a large, fully equipped KITCHEN.

The second story of the Harrison house includes the MASTER BEDROOM having a queen size poster bed and a twin trundle bed, a full bath, and an adjacent small READING ROOM which has a twin sofa bed.

The third floor of the Harrison House is the ATTIC

The second story of the rear or "Mansfield wing" which is entered from the second story hall of the Harrison house, includes the BLUE ROOM having a full size converted rope bed, an adjacent room with a twin sleigh bed, a full bath, and the PEACH ROOM having a twin bed.

The new, or "Byrne wing," which is entered from the foyer of the Harrison house or by a private entrance, includes a DEN on the first floor having a fireplace, a half bath, a private spiral staircase leading to a WING BEDROOM with dormer windows, having a full size converted rope bed and a full bath.

There are water views from all rooms of the house except the library and peach room.

The rooms are furnished with period and reproduction furniture. The house is heated with a hot water radiator system and cooled with central air conditioning.
